My name is William Sedutto, and I suppose that, at this point, I have to admit that I am a philosopher, whether by nature, nurture and/or choice, I am not sure. That is to say that the questions that motivate me, more than any others, are the ones that deal with what things are and what that means. What is the world, and what is the human being? What is the best way for a human being to be in the world?

Originally from Staten Island, NYC, I studied philosophy and classical languages at Georgetown University, Oxford University, and Boston College, ultimately earning my Ph.D. in philosophy at the New School for Social Research. I have experience teaching philosophy and languages and taught for several years at the college level. I have also been certified as a Client Counselor by the American Philosophical Practitioners Association (APPA). In addition to my work as a philosophical practitioner, I am also involved in the field of international development, particularly health and nutrition in Central America.

We have a dog named Sophrosyne, with an “e”. On the night that I met my wife, I was trying to impress her by talking about the class I was teaching, which dealt with Aristotle and his notion sophrosyne, still a Greek word, which meant for Aristotle something like the wisdom necessary for temperance and moderation. My future wife said, “Oh, that would be a wonderful name for a poodle!” She had always loved poodles, and now, fifteen years later, we have two of them. “Sophrosynai” is the somewhat non-sensical plural of “sophrosyne”, and I chose it for the name of the practice because the web domain name of “sophrosynai” was very inexpensive compared to “sophrosyne”. What’s in a name? Sometimes a lot, I suppose.
If you decide to give Sophrosynai Philosophical Practice a try, you can expect the following. After you reach out, we will start with the scheduling of a phone call to chat a little bit and schedule a face to face meeting. Our first meeting, which can take place in person or via the internet, will be a free consultation. It will be a chance for you to express what you think you might be looking for, or just to explore possibilities. It will be a chance for me to express to you what I think I could offer or what we might be able to do… and we will go from there!
At this time, I am offering my time at the rate of $50/hour. If money is very tight, I am prepared to consider reduced rates.
